Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced Monday, Sept. 27, his office intends to dismiss approximately 58, 000 marijuana convictions. The felony and misdemeanor cases that are eligible for dismissal date back as far as 30-plus years, the District Attorney’s Office said. The dismissals of these cases are part of Gascón’s efforts to reverse what in a statement he calls the “injustices” of drug laws.“Dismissing these convictions means the possibility of a better future to thousands of disenfranchised people who are receiving this long-needed relief, ” Gascón said. “It clears the path for them to find jobs, housing and other services that previously were denied to them because of unjust cannabis laws. ”The cases build upon 66, 000 other cannabis convictions in L. A. County that were dismissed by the state last year, the District Attorney’s Office said. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
